The toolkit is designed to:
- Inform workers in children's
services about their
responsibilities to identify and
respond to substance misuse
by young people.
- Help workers make decisions
about responding to young
people's substance use.
- Help workers take action
to
get specialist help for young
people who are using
substances.

The toolkit consists of
a number of documents:
Sheffield's policy on substance misuse and
young people. This makes clear what we expect of workers and services
that support young people, so that we are all clear about our roles
in addressing substance misuse.
How to screen and identify substance misuse
problems with the young people you work with. This tells you why screening
is important and how to go about it.
Provides guidance relating to questions
of Confidentiality, Consent, Parental Involvement and Child Protection.
Referring young people for specialist support.
This tells you how to refer young people to the SHED service and what
to expect from them.
Directory of useful contacts, including
where to access training.
The Screening Tool form. This form can
be photocopied and used as part of the screening process. It has
a number of questions that will help you and the young person decide
if a referral for specialist help is needed.
This toolkit and the approach it recommends has been approved
and agreed by the range of services working in partnership to support
young peoples and families in Sheffield: Sheffield City Council
Children and Young People's Directorate, Sheffield Futures, Sheffield
Youth Offending Team, Turning Point, Sheffield Black Drug Service,
North Sheffield Drug and Alcohol Project, the Sheffield Primary
Care Trusts.
Note: although the toolkit is designed to be
used by nonspecialist workers, we recommend that you have some basic
training on substance misuse awareness, or some experience of working
with young people who use drugs, before you use the toolkit..
